London: Groombridge , 1871. VG. 1871 edition. PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY ROBERT JOHN WELCH, on front endpaper. Inscription reads, 'Miss Elinor Wray McCloy/from her friend Robert J Welch/Oct 1930'. Robert John Welch, (1859-1936), was an Irish photographer born in Strabane, Northern Ireland: a member of the Royal Irish Academy he had an interest in natural history, and in particular molluscs. His bookplate, with a shell and shoreline design, is on the front paste-down. The book is bound in original publishers green cloth, blocked in gilt and black on spine and front cover, lettered gilt on spine and front cover. All edges gilt. Illustrated with eight hand-coloured plates and line-engravings in text. Full title is, 'Beautiful Shells: Their Nature, Structure, and Uses Familiary Explained with directions for collecting, cleaning, and arranging them in the cabinet, and descriptions of the most remarkable species'. Front inner hinge starting, but book very secure; occasional spotting throughout; else a very good copy of a UNIQUE 1871 edition which was owned by ROBERT JOHN WELCH..
