About This Item

Glasgow: Richard Griffin & Co., 1823. First Edition, with provenance, the Henry Lee copy. Embellished with engravings throughout. 12mo, publisher’s original 3/4 dark green morocco over marbled boards, the spine lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers. vi, 288 pp. A charming, fine tight copy, the binding slightly age mellowed, the text-block clean and tight. SCARCE FIRST EDITION OF THIS FINE COLLECTION OF EARLY SCOTTISH POETRY. Henry Lee's copy. The Lee family was engaged in early mercantile capitalism in America and was an important figure in its development. The family showed remarkable powers of adaptation to successive forms of capitalism, mercantile, industrial, and financial; and, as opportunity served, they were to do more than their share in promoting the cultural welfare of America.
The Lees exported and imported and wholesaled their goods in America. They had ships at sea and were active in the Calcutta trade and the East Indian affairs. It is Henry Lee's bookplate that is affixed here.
