Spine in six compartments of raised bands. Gilt text on 2. Dense gilt ornamentation on 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6. All edges gilt. Pasted and free marbled endpapers. , Notes: A travel book detailing the culture of Turkey through stories and illustrations from the mid 19th century. Miss Pardoe, an English author, travelled to Turkey in 1835. She gained some fame through this book as it became quite popular due of the beautiful steel engravings and her knack for captivating prose. , Size: 4to (272x208mm). , Illustration: Illustrated with an engraved title page, a frontispiece portrait of the author, a portrait of Sultan Abdul Medschid Chan, a map, and 84 engravings. All engravings are done by numerous engravers after W. H. Bartlett. , Provenance: There is a bookplate on the verso of the top cover that reads “Catherine Matthews,” and there is writing on the top right hand corner on the verso of the front endpaper that reads, “Edwin C.
