About This Item

NY: Abbeville Press, 1995.. 4to. Hardbound in dust jacket. First edition. Prologue by Allen Ginsberg. Excellent book documenting the Beat influence on the art, music, fashion, and popular culture of the '50s and '60s. Issued to coincide with the 1995 landmark exhibition at the Whitney Museum. It traces the Beat connection to the New York School, Happenings, Abstract Expressionism, jazz, and the underground films of Robert Frank and John Cassavetes, with the accent on the visual contributions of the Beats. Profusely illustrated, with reproductions of paintings by Kerouac, Harold Norse, Robert Rauschenberg, Jay De Feo, Wallace Berman, and others, installations by Ed Kienholz, stills from Cassavetes' films, documentary photographs, and much more. Essential book for anyone interested in the Beats or the avant-garde. Highly recommended. One corner bumped, else fine in near fine dust jacket with minute tears to the top of the flap folds.
