About This Item

Chicago: A. L. Burt, 1920s. Hardcover. Fair/Fair. Champneys. Fair book in fair dust jacket, mismatched. The dust jacket is that of the Methuen edition from c. 1950, with cover art by Champneys. It has heavy wear, with some loss at the head and tail of the spine, and masking tape reinforcements on the back side. The tape has dried and stiffened, and is showing through on the back. Dust jacket is now in a new removable protective cover. The book is bound in light green cloth with black print on the front and the spine, with soiling to the boards. The front hinge is partly separated, and webbing is showing in the front gutter. Some pages have fingerprints or soiling. Profusely illustrated with black-and-white line drawings by J. Allen St. John, including a two-page illustrated title page and frontispiece. A. L. Burt hard cover with mismatched dust jacket; 1917 reprint edition, but from binding probably printed in the early 1920s. 337 pages. Dust Jacket art by Champneys; interior art by J. Allen St. John. 12mo (5"" x 7.5"") From the estate of noted science fiction writer and editor Mike Resnick - receipt included. Third in Tarzan series, preceded by The Return of Tarzan, and followed by The Son of Tarzan and others. Originally published as a five-part serial in All-Story Cavalier Weekly, May 16 - June 13, 1914, and expanded for book publication. First edition was published by A. C. McClurg in 1916. This item dated by reference from Robert R. Zeuchner's Edgar Rice Burroughs bibliography. Dust jacket dated through price (7 s.) and the list of Thorne Smith titles on the back.
