Green half-leather binding with marbled boards and endpapers. Rebacked with original spine details, lettering and arabesque designs preserved. Wear to boards at edges and corners. Pages clean.
John Lockwood Kipling (1837-1911) is probably best remembered as the father of author, Rudyard Kipling, for whom he illustrated many books. He was an artist, a museum curator and served as Principal at Mayo School of Arts in Lahore, British India (now Pakistan). This book looks at animals in relation to Indian culture, a subject he studied while living in Lahore. The animals include monkeys, asses, goats and sheep, goats and oxen, buffaloes and pigs, horses and mules, elephants, camels, etc. Chapters on animals calls, animal training, reptiles, animals in Indian art, beast fights, animals and the supernatural.
