About This Item

Greenwood Press, New York, first edition, 1992. Cloth, gilt cover-title, 8vo, 22 cm,. xii, 176, [1] pp. 528 entries. This volume is a comprehensive bibliographical and historiographical survey of the battle of Jutland, the major naval engagement of World War I. Rasor has sought to incorporate comment on all published books, monographs, official reports, dissertations, bibliographies, pertinent journals and periodicals, collections of unpublished personal papers, letters, diaries, manuscripts, and other materials. Sources appropriate to the background on the origins and consequences of the war, related events leading up to the battle, and associated aspects of the battle are included as well. In Part I : Narrative and Historiographical Survey, Rasor surveys the battle and its context, aiming to clarify what happened and why from British and German perspectives, and integrating throughout comment on the written sources. This Part is arranged in 6 chapters : 1 Introduction; 2 Battle of Jutland: Background; 3 Battle of Jutland: The Battle; 4 Battle of Jutland: The Assessment; 5 Battle of Jutland: Various Accounts and the Controversy; 6 Sources for Research on the Battle of Jutland. Part II : Annotated Bibliography then lists, describes and evaluates some 528 works (with details of author, title, publisher, place and year of publication, number of pages, and Rasor's incisive annotation in anything up to about 150 words). With an index to Part I. Fine.
