About This Item
Bath, Somerset : Morgan Books. Very Good/Very Good. 1972. First Edition. Hard Cover. 8vo 0903044056 Dust jacket complete, unclipped. Ilustrated end papers. Plates. 114 pages clean and tight. In the early part of the nineteenth century Bath still wore something of the air of gentility it had inherited from the days when the city was the centre of fashion. It still enjoyed the patronage of wealth, albeit from a nouveau riche middle-class. Its attitude toward the working classes was almost paternal. There are no harrowing stories of extreme poverty, or of the cruel exploitation of children. Because there was no industry in Bath then, the rate of change that was being accelerated elsewhere by the Industrial Revolution was slower. Yet, surprisingly, the citizens of Bath, who might have been expected to have been reluctant to accept change, gave a considerable lead to reform. There were very lively scenes in the city during the parliamentary election of 1832. These are fully described in this detailed study of Bath and its people at a time when the old order was giving way to a new. .
