About This Item

Cincinnati: Robert Clark & Co., Publishers, 1859 Hard cover, 8vo., in full calf with a blind-stamped border. The title is in gilt upon a red leather label to the flat spine. The owner's name is inscribed on the spine in old ink. Also, owner's signature to front end paper: " H.S.K. Morrison." Collation: [3], 16, 6, 273, [4]. A classic of the British legal author Charles Barton(1768-1843), first published 1847. The revised edition includes a Preface, Analytical Table, Introduction to the History and Jurisdiction of the Court in Chancery, Rules of Practice in the Circuit Courts of the United States, and the English Orders in Chancery. CONDITION: Good: loss to head and foot of spine, some marks and dust soiling to exterior. Three defective outside joints. Generally foxed and blotted with old ink. A well-used item once belonging to the Virginia jurist, H.S.K. Morison. After serving in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War, Morison would go on to study law at the Univ. of Virginia, where some of his correspondence now resides. A noted opinion of Morison won the day on appeal to the Supreme Court of Virginia, [Commonwealth vs. Dawn, 32 Gratt 912] allowing a murder conviction solely on the basis of circumstantial evidence. . Hard Cover. Good.
