About This Item

Edinburgh/London: William Blackwood and Sons, 1852. Billings' magnum opus, a compendium of 240 finely rendered engravings of the castles, halls & churches of Scotland, hithertofore but scarcely considered, with commentary. The subscribers' list denotes a Folio Proof edition, an India Proof edition, Large Paper and Small Paper editions; we believe this to be the 'Large Paper' edition. Bound in full red leather by MacLehose of Glasgow. Set of four, complete. Shelfworn, edges show some wear, hinges have external cracking, but bindings still sound. Head of volume one shows a chip. Period armorial bookplate of one John Dryden ['Non Nisi Per Ardua'] in volumes I & II; circa 1912 bookplate of CT/NY doctor Frederic Grosvenor Goodridge in all four volumes. Light foxing to flyleaves; text pages lightly tanned; plates generally clean, though a few minor tanned spots are noted. Unpaginated; 240 fine engraved plates, many with a few pages of letterpress description, small wood engravings within the text.. First Edition. Full Leather. Good. Illus. by Author. 9" by 11¼". Set.
