[London]: Sold by Mr. Rippon [and others], 1793. 1st ed. Hardcover. Good. tables (1 folding), viii, 16, [4], [17]-564, (21)p. Contemporary leather. 21 cm. Ex lib. (Bangor Hist. Soc. and Bangor Theological Seminary). Cover worn (backstrip heavily scuffed and lacking numerous surface pieces; split at front joint). This copy lacks all three portraits called for the in the "Directions to the Binder, and Others." Contents otherwise sound and clean with only light foxing and some age-toning. This assemblage of Baptist-related material includes "An Account of the Life of Mr. David George, from Sierra Leone in Africa, given by himself in a Conversation with Brother Rippon of London, and Brother Pearce of Birmingham." (pp. 473-484). His autobiographical account states that George was born a slave near the Nottaway River in Essex County, Virginia. He escaped and was recaptured before becoming free during the American Revolution. Rev. George was evacuated by the British to Nova Scotia, where he became a Baptist preacher for five years, before being settled in Sierra Leone with other free blacks from Nova Scotia. This volume also contains a report, at pages 332-344, on two Baptist churches consisting chiefly of slaves (one was in Kingston, Jamaica; the other in Savannah, Georgia).
