"His ambition was to gather together in one area plants from countries all around the globe. He decided to go to Southern California because the climate was well suited for his purpose...in 1904 Francheschi acquired forty acres of land on Mission Ridge, at the time a dry barren hillside entirely out of the bounds of the city. He he built a house where he lived until he left Santa Barbara, a place he named "Montarioso."-John M. Tucker.
