About This Item
Catalogue of the 1971 exhibition of the Hungarian Neo-Avant-garde group, the artists of the Balatonboglár Chapel Studio.
Illustrated with the reproduction of a work by each exhibiting artists.
The exhibiting artists of the VII Studio exhibition were György Galántai, István Haász, Ildikó Várnagy, Rafael Ábrahám, Vilma Somlai, Ferenc Banga, András Miklós Sáros, Róbert Swierkiewicz, Árpád Szabados and Béla Szeift.
The Chapel Studio in Balatonboglár was organised and ran by the Hungarian Neo-Avant-garde and Fluxus artist, György Galántai (b. 1941). In 1968 Galántai contracted with the parish church of Balatonboglár to lease the chapel for art purposes and transformed it into a summer studio and an alternative art institute. Between 1970 and 1973, 35 exhibitions, concerts, theatrical performances, and film showings were held in in the chapel, featuring the best of Hungary's avant-garde artists as well as guest artists from abroad, making the Chapel Studio one of the most important centers of progressive art of the '70s in Hungary. The activity of the Studio was considered politically undesirable by the Communist leadership and it was eventually closed by the police in 1973.
