Mammoth collection of documents & testimony related to the "Baking Powder War", which erupted not long after the invention of cream of tartar + baking soda as chemical leavening: the profits of a leading manufacturer, Royal Baking Powder, were threatened by a new mixture involving alum so they attempted to get alum-based powders declared a health hazard; massive fraud and corruption ensued. The volumes include governmental & courtroom testimony, news articles, affadavits, other court documents, papers on chemical analysis, physiological experiments, articles on baking & leavening, legislation, cartoons, and more. Two large hardcovers, original cloth bindings - volume two is dated 1907. General wear, some staining to covers, ink name & date (of historian of chemistry Aaron Ihde) in each volume, another name & number on each title page; minor smudges and pencil marginalia to a few pages; inner hinges mended. [6], 964; [9]; 966 to 2109 pages; index, 28 pages illustrations.
