When John Buckland Wright died in 1954 his studio contained a number of his engraved woodblocks, mostly those for which he had a particular fondness. This volume publishes "all the engravings of bathers or of women in watery landscapes and seascapes," comprising twenty-five plates printed from the original blocks. In addition, the introduction is illustrated with tipped-in prints and photographs.
This copy has been specially bound by Lester Capon in boards sculpted in feminine curves. Covered in five differently colored calfskins with leather onlays and inlays of further variety. These, along with Capon's droplets of gold tooling to both covers and Finnish reindeer suede doublures, evokes the sensuality so readily associated with Buckland Wright's style. Held in lined tray which slides out from underneath a green plexiglass shield, so that when the book emerges it does so as if from underwater into sunlight. All protected by a clamshell box. Fine.
