About This Item
(Easthampton, MA): Pennyroyal Press, 1970. Moser, Barry. Quarto. (33)ff. From an edition of thirty-five copies reserved for distribution by the artist, this is Moser's own, with his bookplate inside the front cover, and with four additional proofs, each titled, signed, and dated in pencil. Contains ten wood engravings by Moser and six epigrams from the Anthologia Graeca translated by D.L. Graham, along with a list of plates. The six epigrams, in Greek and English, are printed with type ornaments in red, yellow, and olive. This is the first Pennyroyal book to use wood engravings. According to Moser's inscription, Bacchanalia represents "the first SUCCESSFUL (Moser's emphasis) wood engravings in my oeuvre. One terrible print... was done in 1968 or '69 but it was so disappointing I never made another until 1970 and then did so under the aegis of Fred Becker for a graduate course of printmaking at the University of Mass." Bound in stiff blue wrappers, with the title stamped in blind to the front cover. Sunning to spine and half of front cover, mild edgewear, else a near fine copy. (Pennyroyal 4).
