Oates intended to write a book about her experiences there, but instead wrote a novel about the city and its inhabitants.The novel tells the story of a young girl, Gertrude, and her brother, Peter, who are forced to flee their home in Nazi-occupied Europe and journey to Babylon, where their father has been appointed governor. Gertrude is determined to find her way in a new and strange world, but Peter is overwhelmed by the violence and chaos of the war-torn city.Babylon is a rich and complex novel, full of unforgettable characters and scenes.
