About This Item

Berlin, printed by Radetsky Brothers for A. F. Devriena, (1920).. Russian text, circa 1920s, oblong 4to, 185 x 270 mm, 7½ x 10½ inches, tan card covers with repeat coloured illustration of the 2 toys, Baby Elephant and Teddy Bear, lettered in grey, 32 pages, each with a half-page coloured illustration and two 4-line verses beneath printed blue. The illustrations depict the jolly activities of the 2 toys, often involving mischief, on 1 page their mothers give them a whipping, and at the end Father Christmas puts in an appearance. Expertly recased with new matching paper spine, lower corner of lower cover neatly repaired, covers lightly browned at edges and slightly rubbed and marked, inner margin of title page repaired, tiny chip to lower corner of page 5, small repair to margin just above, a few small closed margin edge tears, 50 mm (2") closed tear to 1 inner margin, all neatly repaired, small chip to lower edge of final page, neatly repaired, plus a vertical crease just starting to crack to inner margin of the same page, all pages slightly browned at edges. A fair copy, restored, of a charming children's book. After the October 1917 revolution Russian emigres flooded into Germany and other European countries. Their first stop was Berlin and the German city was soon transformed into a Russian mini capital. Until 1924 Berlin was the centre of Russian publishing in exile. The publisher of our book, A. F. Devriena, was established in St. Petersburg in the 1890s. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE. FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST. POSTAGE AT COST.
