About This Item
Joseph Cundall, London., 1849. First edition. Folio. 10 steel engraved plates, with paper guards, by John Brandard (after the Marchioness of Waterford), this being the very rare Large Paper hand-coloured issue. Original red paper boards lettered in gilt and rebacked with red cloth.Joseph Cundall wrote under the pseudonym of "Stephen Percy", was a pioneer photographer, and a publisher of children's books for which he commissioned some of the best artists of the day. The present title was the most ambitious of Cundall's books, printed in the year he went bankrupt. The sheets were properly hand-coloured as opposed to stencilled. Cover edges stained and quite rubbed at the edges but the text, bar a little marginal marking and creasing, is very good. A superb example of a Victorian gift book.
