Frontispiece portraits with tissue guards in each volume (Vol. I Charles II, King of Spain; Vol. II Henri Harcourt), with a fold-out copy of an important letter in each volume. Light foxing throughout each volume, else unmarked. The Marquis of Harcourt was French Ambassador under Charles II and Philippe V, and this history was compiled by Hippeau from the personal archives of Harcourt Castle and the official archives of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, with notes and a historic Introduction by Hippeau.
