About This Item
No binding. Single sheet. 7.5 x 5.25in. A 'note' for his opera libretto 'Casanova,' which reveals two corrections and, potentially, the originally conceived title 'Les Memoires de Casanova.' Though one of his lesser known works, only published posthumously in 1952, it has gained a unique status among the most zealous of the poet's admirers as a profoundly elusive and ultimately subversive text. Michel Decaudin, the Gallimard editor of Apollinaire's complete works, suggests in his critical anthology 'Le 'Casanova' d'Apollinaire: 'Comedie parodique' that the libretto functions as a critique of the artist himself, frequently indulges in self mockery, satirizes the opera world, and ultimately indicts the verse form itself. Decaudin goes on that the opera is in complete congruity with Apollinaire's late vow to destroy genre distinctions, but that these subtleties, as well as those of the aforementioned, are only ever revealed through intense study of the text by the specialist already deeply intimate with the entirety of Apollinaire's output. As pictured.
