About This Item
10 November 1875. 1 page 7 x 4½ inches, small filing hole, minor blemishes only. John MacGregor (1825 1892), nicknamed Rob Roy after a renowned relative, was a Scottish explorer, travel writer and philanthropist. He is generally credited with the development of the first sailing canoes and with popularising canoeing as a sport in Europe and the United States. He founded the British Royal Canoe Club (RCC) in 1866 becoming its first Captain. I enclose my Carte [not present] representing me in my little yawl Rob Roy (not the canoe), in which I sailed 1500 miles, entirely alone; crossing the Channel twice, once by the long passage of 100 miles from Havre to England.
