If you like it, I can send another, of about the same length, in regard to Joseph Sowards, a Union scout who acted for Garfield in his East Kentucky campaign, and whose career had in it many resemblances to that of 'Harry Birch' in Cooper's "Spy". I had the story from Garfield himself. A few days ago I had a long interview with Adam Badeau, who gave me a very interesting account of how Grant wrote his memoirs, & of his relations with the General. I have his permission to use what he sa...Also a little time ago I got some interesting facts about Washington Irving at Tarrytown that I have never seen in print..." Fine.<br/> <br/> American abolitionist and author who was dispatched by President Lincoln in April 1864 on a visit to Jefferson Davis in Richmond, to deliver a proposal for peace which included the perpetual abolition of slavery. In return, Lincoln offered $500,000,000 as compensation to the slaveholders and amnesty to all those engaged in the rebellion.<br/> <br/>
