About This Item
One page. Small quarto. In black ink. On personal letterhead with Riegger's name and address in New York printed at head.
A brief note stating: "I trust that the enclosed preface will, as we say, fill the bill." A noted American composer, Riegger's circle included Cowell, Ives, Ruggles, Varèse and Salzedo. After working as a cellist, conductor, and voice coach, he began to compose seriously in about 1928. "Over the next few years he gained a reputation as one of the most articulate exponents of avant-garde modernism, and threw himself into the work of new music organizations... The last decade of Riegger's life saw a continual succession of commissions and frequent performances. Being summoned to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1957 for his communist sympathies hardly interrupted a series of honours and awards which showed the high regard in which he was held at the time of his death." Stephan Spackman in Grove Music Online.
