About This Item

New College, Oxford, 18 April 1827. 4 pp. 7 x 9 inches, address panel, one hole at seal tear, otherwise in good condition. Augustus William Hare (1792–1834), Church of England clergyman and author. In 1827 with his brother Julius Charles Hare he published Guesses at Truth, by Two Brothers, a collection of essays and aphorisms inspired by Coleridge and Wordsworth. After his death many of his sermons were widely read, through the two volumes known as The Alton Sermons, or, Sermons to a Country Congregation, first published in 1837 and frequently reprinted.
