New York: September 1884.. 1884.. Very good. - Letter penned in black ink and filling 1-1/2 sides of a sheet of cream paper folded to form 4 sides, each approximately 7 inches high by 4-3/8 inches wide. Signed "Simon Stevens". Folded twice for mailing. The first side is slightly darkened & soiled along the folds with a tiny stain at top left. Very good. <p>Stevens sends General Horatio Wright General Bernard's anecdote [not here present] "told twelve years ago at a dinner for General Mitchell at Inverness in Scotland..."<p>Born in Barnet, Vermont, Simon Stevens [1825-1894] passed the bar in 1844. He moved to New York in 1860 and became renowned as a corporation adviser in riparian water rights. He later became president of Mexico's Tehuantepec Railroad. He was the brother of bookmen Henry and Benjamin Stevens.<p>Horatio Gouverneur Wright [1820-1899] was an engineer and general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. After the war he was involved in a number of engineering projects, including the Brooklyn Bridge and the completion of the Washington Monument.
