About This Item

Pullman, May 25th, 1887., 1887.. Very good. - A 2-1/4 inch high by 3-3/4 inch wide calling card signed in full "Jacob G. Gaudaur" and annotated by him as "Champion Sculler of America / Pullman May 25th, 1887". The date is very slightly smudged. Very good.

One of two native Canadians who won the Professional World Sculling Championship, Jacob Gill "Jake" Gaudaur (1858-1937) defeated the former champion at a sculling event in Pullman, Illinois. Gaudaur's first race was in 1880 when he was 17 years old. He gained attention when he defeated Edward Trickett, the former World Champion the following year. Gaudaur was trained by Ned Hanlan, who was the World Champion through the early 1880's. In a sculling event held on May 30th, 1887 on Lake Calumet in Pullman, Illinois, but a few days after Gaudaur autographed this card, Gaudaur defeated Ned Hanlan. Gaudaur's time of 19 minutes 30 seconds over 3 miles was at that time the fastest known in a single scull contest. Gaudaur then went on to defeat the reigning World Champion Jim Stanbury in 1896.
