New York and London: Columbia University Press, 1968. Second Printing Thus. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Near Fine/Very Good. 8vo. Pp. xv, 407. Illustrated with a few black-and-white photographs. Includes a chronological table. Index. Bound in tan cloth with gilt emblem stamped on the front board, gilt lettering on spine. Former owner name on the front free endpaper. In the price-clipped dust jacket that shows moderate edge-wear. A fine assessment of Japan's transition from feudal introversion to adoption of Western science and other advancements, presented in the from of an autobiography by one who advocated the latter approach. The preface for the 1899 edition is presented here. Dust jacket is now housed in a removable, clear archival sleeve.
