About This Item

Adyar: The Theosophical Publishing House. Very Good. 1952. Softcover. Faint tanning to edges; nick to rear leading top corner tip; leading top corner a bit bumped; faded "Dayananda" written on spine; tiny note "R/168" in red ink inside top corner tip front cover and a tiny mark in blue ink top leading corner front endpaper. Cicular handstamp of Motilal Banarsidas on title page. In spite of these minor faults, still seems a crisp copy of a scarce and fragile booklet. ; Printed pale green wrappers. Photographic portrait frontis of Sarasvati. ; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 68 pages; Dayanand Sarasvati (1824-1833) was a prominent Hindu scholar and reformer. He founded the Arya Samaj, a socio-religious movement in India that aimed at promoting Vedic principles and opposing certain orthodox Hindu practices. Sarasvati advocated for the Vedas as the ultimate authority in Hinduism, rejecting idol worship, caste system, and other rituals that he considered deviations from Vedic teachings. Among his contributions were his opposition to untouchability, promotion of the equal rights for women and his commentary on the Vedas from Vedic Sanskrit in Sanskrit as well as in Hindi. .
