Description:
D. Van Nostrand Company, 1862. Hardcover. Very Good. in x in x in. Most of fold outs seem never to have been folded out. Two were folded out and not folded back in correctly so they overhang the pages a bit at front page edge. Last 2 pages of advertisements have been removed as has the rear free page. Bookplate of previous owner laid in: Lewis E. C. Hinckley. On front free page is the inked name: L. Hinckley, 18th Maine Vols, LEC Hinckley, Dec. 19th, 1876. The 1st Maine Heavy Artillery Regiment was a regiment in the Union Army during the Civil War. It suffered more casualties in an ill-fated charge during the Siege of Petersburg than any Union regiment lost in a single day of combat throughout the war. The regiment was mustered in Bangor, Maine, in 1862 as the 18th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment and consisted mostly of men and officers from the Penobscot River Valley.

New York: D. Van Nostrand, 1863. Hard Cover. Very Good binding. Three 24mo. volumes; in the publisher's green cloth, embossed cloth, each stamped in blind with an American eagle to the center of each board and ruled in blind to the perimeter of the boards; with eagle decoration and titling in gilt to the spine; perhaps a married set (though not by us) as Volumes I & II have two different previous owner names. ~~The textblock of Volume II is beginning to separate at 208-209; while it is still holding by the strings, it is decidedly tender; the corners of Volume III have significant wear, especially at the rear board; the green cloth turn-in to the front board of Volume I is a bit loose from the pastedown. ~~With all plates present, for a total of 97, of which many are folding.~~Volume I: Schools of the soldier and company; Instructions for skirmishers and music; [5], 6-279, including Notation for Bugle Calls and Contents, followed by [6] pages of publisher's ads; with 37 plates; Volume II: School of…
