This is a very lovely small book of poetry by Dante Gabriel Rossetti with illustrations by Paul Woodroffe. It was published by David McKay, Philadelphia, and dates to circa 1916. This appears to be a special binding, more luxurious than the softcover binding that McKay published, because this one has covers of thick rose-colored suede leather with the title and author impressed deeply into the suede on the front cover and spine. The front and back have double-page illustrations by Paul Woodroffe, as shown, and the title page has a lovely design as well as a facing illustration; there are 3 other illustrations among the 27 pages. The illustrations are in the Arts & Crafts or Art Nouveau style. The page edges are gilt, as shown, and there is a pink ribbon bookmark sewn in. Dark purplish-blue grained cloth lettered in gold at the spine. A small area of discolouration to the head of the backstrip where the dust wrapper is defective, paperstock very lightly tanned and with just a hint of spotting to the title page and to very occasional text leaves. A very crisp copy in non-price-clipped dust wrapper, tanned at the spine panel with a single small area of loss, and with a little further uneven tanning to the front and rear panels. Former owner name neatly inked to the head of the front free endpaper, along side a date to the base of the front pastedown (this last obscured by the wrapper flap). Larkin's second mature appearance in print. Watercolor flowers added to p. [93] by former owner. Very scarce. In Poor Condition: incomplete: lacking pp. 27-34, 89-92, and 131-32; lacking leather at head of spine; boards are very worn, with loss along edges; lacking lower corner of title page, without loss of text; section lacking along fore-edge of pp. 101-2, without loss of text; 5-cm. tear from lower corner of pp. 127-8, without loss of text; light soiling throughout.

First edition - the uncommon first state, which was subsequently withdrawn and pulped; this copy seemingly the publisher's file copy, with that text lightly inkstamped to the front free endpaper. 8vo. 66pp. Green cloth lettered in gold at the spine. A fine copy in non-price-clipped dust wrapper, just slightly faded at spine panel and at the head of the upper panel, and with a small sliver of staining to the lower edge. Thirty Betjeman poems accompanied by a Piper frontispiece and seventeen line drawings, several of them full-page. Printing errors impacting the poems 'Bristol and Clifton' and 'Sunday Afternoon in St. Enodoc Church, Cornwall' necessitated a complete recall and a corrected edition was published the following year.
