About This Item

Mansell Information / Publishing Ltd, London, first edition, 1976. Cloth, 4to, 26 cm,. xiii, 153 pp. From the introduction: "In 1961 I began work on a study of the literary 'little magazines' published in Great Britain during the period 1930 to 1939. After a very short time it became apparent that a finding list would be needed for the many important contributions scattered throughout their pages, particularly since almost none of the titles was included in any of the standard indexes to periodicals. So I began to compile my own index and it is this which is presented here…This is an author index to the magazines listed on p. xi, and it contains about 11,000 entries. Each entry gives first the author's name and then the title of his contribution. Where there is no title a brief title is supplied, e.g. Review, Poem, Play, and, in the case of reviews, this is usually followed in square brackets by the author and title of the work reviewed. … These details are then followed by the abbreviated title of the periodical, the volume and part number, the date of publication, the page reference, and a symbol which gives a general indication of the character of the contribution indexed, e.g. v = poetry; p = creative prose; I = illustration. At the end of each block of entries listing the contributions of a particular author will be found a list of the titles of the books he published during the period and the names of those persons who reviewed these books in the 'little magazines'. Occasionally it has been possible to identify anonymous contributions; this has been done silently. Most of the magazines have been fully indexed, including all minor contributions and book reviews. Very Good.
