XII, 460pp., last blank, acknowledgements, list of illustrations, list of maps, forward by His Excellency the Governor-General of Australia, The Right Honourable, Sir Paul Hasluck, G.C.M.G., G.C.V.O., K.St. J., author's note, bibliography, index of military formations, general index. Photographic endpapers, showing World War I Australian soldiers. Within the text there are 8 coloured illustrations, 79 black and white photographs and 26 maps and one double page map. Green buckram with gilt writing on the spine. Corners are very slightly rubbed and responding to the heading to the heel of the spine. The spine has a crease the runs the fall length, ? printing fault. Browning and staining to the top paper edge, browning to the rest. Rubbing mark to the bottom paper edge. Some handling marks visible internally, as well as stains. Illustrated dustwrapper, showing "The Light Horse at Beersheba" by G. Lambert, with red and lack writing on the front panel and red on the spine. Chipping to the top corners and there is chipping to the top spine edge, with a 0.5 "tear on the back top spine gutter. There is a tear on the rear spine gutter as well, measuring 1". The remains of a sticker is visible on the top right-hand corner of the front panel, and there has been fading to the spine. Original bookseller's sticker is still visible, on the lower right-hand corner of the front fold over. Grubby marks are also visible on the dustwrapper. Dustwrapper is also somewhat "loose" around the book. The history of the Australian Armed Forces from its first encounter at Waikato, New Zealand, in the 19th-century to the battle of Long Tan, Vietnam, in the 1960s. "The fact that Australian soldiers have achieved successes out of all proportion to their numbers, and that some successes may have been obscured at the time or by military historians, is underlying theme of this magnificent book." – from the front fold over panel blurb. fifth Edition.
