Folio. 106, [2 pp. publisher’s ads]; 80 pp. With 30 colour plates illustrating over 1000 orchid varieties, 76 text illustrations in 1st work, over 100 text woodcut illustrations in the second. Contemporary half-calf over black pebbled cloth, gilt lettering stamped on front cover & spine, bookseller’s label for Livraria Universal at gutter margin at title (occasional light wear, slight rubbing), NF copy from library of L.M. Ashley-Brereton, 1935. Revised edition of volume I and first edition of volume II, both exceedingly scarce works on cultivated orchids, featuring the nicely executed colour plates of over 1000 specimens. The Atlas, first published in 1911 with smaller pagination, details the history of cultivating orchids, their utilization in medicines, perfumes, geographical distribution, a timeline of hybridizer pioneers and botanists, and even includes a supplement focused on 1911-1926 written with Noel Bernard. The second work focuses on concise descriptions of all the cultivated orchid varieties, and includes specific mention of hybrids. Constantin (1857-1936) was at the time professor at the Natural History Museum and National School of Horticulture at Versailles, as well as President of the Mycological Society of France, and Botanical Society of France. No copies of either volume in Worldcat (1957 Atlas reprint located in 2 libraries (Hawaii & Girona).
