About This Item

Near Fine condition; soft creases across upper outer corners of the cover, spine and front cover edges show some color fading, few very light stains on the front cover; internally fine, author's inscription on the title.

Gifted Latvian poet, writer, literary critic Pēteris Ķikuts (1907-1937) known for his radical leftist views. Was accosiated with the leftist avant-garde literary circle Trauksme (Alarm, 1928-1930) and other revolutionary editions. In his writings, Kikuts sharply attacked Social Democrats, defended the interests of the revolutionary working-class, and praised the Soviet Union, showing its tremendous achievements in building socialism. Was imprisoned several times in bourgeous Latvia. Because of the persecutions he had fled to USSR in 1932. But fell as a victim of repression (genocide) of the Soviet regime, in 1937 was arrested by the NKVD and shot.

The verses included in this second collection showing strong leftist avant-garde influences are socially inspired by the painfulness and poverty of workers lifes, the need for a new regime. However, their sound more like the poet's heart cry and emotional declaration of human's feelings, than the expressios of the realistic events.

Book striking constructivist cover in red and black by Roberts Mazjānis (1891-1968), painter, graphic artist, choral conductor, who worked as music and drawing teacher at the parish school. After the WWII immigrated to the USA.
