About This Item
New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company, [1900]. xvi,241 pp. Quarto. Rebound in modern gray cloth with the title panel from the original binding mounted on the spine. Resewn as the original binding was perfect bound and most copies fall apart. Top edge gilt. Photogravure frontispiece. There is a marginal dark stain on the edge of the frontis which offsets slightly onto the edge of the title page. 33 gravure plates from photos by Vittorio Sella; 1 double-page lithographed plate of microscopic organisms; 4 folding panoramas; 2 folding color maps; numerous half tone illustrations. Overall very clean and a much stronger copy due to the new sewing. Neate F24.: "the first of three very important and successful expeditions masterminded by the Duke of Abruzzi". and is "narrated" by the Italian surgeon, scholar and mountain traveller, Filippo de Filippi, the official recorder for the Duke's expeditions. The folding panorama's and the maps are spectacular! Sella was a brilliant photographer. 1900
