About This Item

Hodder and Stoughton. London: Hodder & Stoughton (1953). Second edition. 8vo., blue cloth boards, with gilt lettering to the spine, with the original dust jacket; pp. [xx] 299 [i]; an about very good copy. The book has a lean and the corners of the boards are gently pushed. There is light wear to the spine ends. mild foxing to the preliminaries. There are newspaper cuttings tucked in about the successful everest expedition team that have caused browning marks. The dust wrapper has wear to the spine ends and a tear to the bottom left hand corner of the front panel. This copy has been inscribed by the author and expedition team leader John Hunt on the half title page to the spencer family. The inscription reads "for the spencer family, in recollection of a delightful visit on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the wayfarers club, under geoffrey's presidency, John Hunt 22/11/56."   The Wayfarers' Club was established in 1906 with the aim to encourage and promote mountaineering, rock climbing and mountain walking. Geoffrey Spencer was the president of the club in its 50th year of existence and this book has been dedicated to him by John Hunt in that year, when they met. It is a nice mountaineering association between the leader of the successful everest expedition team of 1953 and the club's president.  . Very Good. Hardcover. 2nd Edition. 1953.

Synopsis

From the book: 'This is the story of how, on 29 May, 1953, two men, both endowed with outstanding stamina and skill, reached the top of Everest and came back unscathed to rejoin their comrades. 'Yet this will not be the whole story, for the ascent of Everest was not the work of one day, nor even of those few anxious, unforgettable weeks in which we prepared and climbed this summer. It is, in fact, a tale of sustained and tenacious endeavour by many, over a long period of time.'
