About This Item

London: Collins in Association with The Tryon Gallery, 1979. Small folio (11 x 7 11/16 inches; 279 x 195 mm.). Collating [160]. One of twenty copies signed in pencil on the title-page by Ralph Thompson and specially bound by Zaehnsdorf in quarter brown morocco, ruled in gilt, over tan cloth boards. Vellum tips. Spine ruled and lettered in gilt with two raised bands and with the Zaehnsdorf monogram in gilt at the foot of the spine. Top edge gilt. Profusely illustrated throughout, including eleven full-page color illustrations, some of which are double-page. Housed in the original tan cloth slipcase. A fine copy.

"Of this edition 20 copies have been reserved by arrangement with the Publishers for fine binding by Zaehnsdorf. This is copy number 9 which has been specially bound for David Brass" (calligraphed on an inserted limitation leaf at front). "This book was first published in 1970. I was fortunate to make this safari in East Africa before the Federation broke up and the different countries went their separate ways. It is, of course, still possible to see the parks mentioned in the book. This new edition is published in a format which, it is hoped, will be much more convenient to handle. It should therefore be easier to examine the pen drawings, and it is these which I regard as the kernel of the book. Although some of the colour plates are now shown as single-page ‘details' only, it is to be hoped that this more manageable format will make the new Artist's Safari a welcome successor to the first edition" (verso of half-title).
