About This Item
One of the first asbestos factory towns in America, Ambler, Pennsylvania was home to the Ambler Asbestos company founded by Dr. Richard Mattison and Henry Keasbey in the 1880's. What had started as a patent medicine company became a producer of asbestos products when Mattison discovered how to make pipe insulation with magnesium carbonate and magnesium. Opening its first textile plant in 1896, the company produced as many asbestos products as it could conceive, including shingles, millboard, tiles, artificial lumber, gloves, gaskets, etc.
