Beeing the onely rare booke of myllitarie profession: drawne out of all our late and forraine seruices, by William Garrard Gentleman, who serued the King of Spayne in his warres fourteene yeeres, and died anno. Domini. 1587. Which may be called, the true steppes of warre, the perfect path of knowledge, and the playne plot of warlike exercises: as the reader heereof shall plainly see expressed. Corrected and finished by Captaine Hichcock. Anno. 1591. 'Charlewood printed quires A and Nn to the end; Howe app[arently]. did the rest'- STC./ L4 is cancelled, with a corresponding gap in pagination; text is continuous./ With an added errata leaf (not included in collation above)/ Signatures: A-K4 L4(-L4) M-2Y4 3A-3B4. OUR example: Lacks: all the folding plates; L2-3; 3A-3B4 (pp. 353-368). There is inserted a variant of leaf K2, wherein the text on the recto is essentially correct, but the page number reads 79 instead of 67; on the verso appears part of the text intended for M2 (p. 83) with the page no. 80. The misprintings of this leaf certainly relate to the cancelled L4. Loose in a later half leather binding. Our example with the manuscript ownership of Captain A.G. Hartshorne, 12th The Kelat-i-Ghilzie Regiment, 1874. The 12th were an infantry regiment of the British Indian Army. They could trace their origins to 1838, when they were raised as the 3rd Battalion, Shah Shuja's Force. In 1842 the battalion distinguished itself at the battle of fort 'Kelat-i-Ghilzie' for which it was allowed to retain the name as an honour title. Designated the 12th Pioneers in 1903, it was merged with the 2nd Bombay Pioneers in 1922, finally being disbanded in 1929. An example of this book with the folding plates sold for 6000 GBP. Cockle 54; ESTC S105703; STC 11625. RARE. W138. Hardcover.
