About This Item
New York: Knopf, 1981. First Printing, First Edition Thus. . Hardcover. Very Good/Near Fine. The sixth and last of Gardner's short story collections, issued in the year before his death in a motorcycle accident. There are ten stories of a wide and varied nature, some of queens and kings and princesses in faraway magical lands; one of Welsh immigrants in upstate New York in the 1930s; another of a world-famous orchestra conductor who learns about life and death from a teenaged girl on a flight from Los Angeles to Chicago; also a story of a stubborn old woman whose unquenchable desire for revenge leads her to risk her own life in the attempt. Boards are lightly damp-stained along the edges and on spine; remainder mark on bottom edge of the text, o/w boards and text are clean and unmarked, tight and square. The heavy paper dustjacket and text are illustrated by Mary Azarian. The dj shows only a touch of edgewear, no tears, no creasing or chipping, not price-clipped. Makes a good reading/study copy, or placeholder.
