Illustrator: Various. 1.35 kg.; 256 pp., indexed, and illustrated throughout with reproductions of period art work and manuscripts in both colour, and black-and-white. While there is some mention of guns, and a boxing and pistols, and samurai, this book is devoted to the art of, history of and development of the sword. The book has an extensive bibliography. The illustrated dust jacket is lightly rubbed on the top edge. The author traces the development of the theory and practice of individual combat from the earliest descriptions -- David and Goliath -- through the heyday of the sword fights with all the formality of its science, to the techniques used in the American West, in commando raids and in gang warfare. He examines the use of the Broadsword, the two hander, the rapier, the dagger, the bayonet, the halberd, the flail, the pistol, the machine gun and many other deadly weapons.
