About This Item

xii+340 pages with film stills, glossary and index. Octavo (8" x 5 1/4") bound in original publisher's wrappers. Second fully revised edition. Reissue of a methodically reasoned statement of the aesthetics of film, as practiced rough from Griffith to the advent of the widescreen style. An added section on film criticism interestingly applies Collingwood's distinctions between amusement art, art as magic and art proper to the "commitment" debate. This is the best single work for people just getting seriously interested in how films work. Condition: Corners bumped and creased, old book stamp to half title, previous owner's initials to front wrapper verso, edge wear else a better than good copy.
