Title page missing, but as the page numbereing is similar to my 1784 edition I am surmising it was published at a similar date.. 8vo., The first page ‘To The Reader’ is very soiled as is the last page. Contents are complete besides the title page being missing. Rebound in an late Victorian or Edwardian period binding with a leather spine with gilt decoration and embossed cloth boards. The former owner has added some medical cure for Whooping Cough, Gravel and an ointment at rear. With the facsimile of Hannah Glasse’s signature on Chapter One as issued.. The contents are lightly browned with some light stains throughout, else a good copy. PART I. Lemon Pickle, Browning for all Sorts of made Dishes, Soups, Fish, Plain Meat, Game, Made Dishes both hot and cold, Pyes, Puddings, &c. PART II. All Kinds of confectionary, particularly the Gold and Silver web for covering of sweetmeats and a desert of spun sugar; with directions to set out a Table in the most elegant Manner, and in the modern Taste; Floating Islands, Fish-ponds, Transparent Puddings, Trifles, Whips, &c. PART III. Pickling, Potting and Collaring, Wines, Vinegars, Catchups, Distilling, with two most valuable Receipts, one for refining Malt Liquors, the other for curing Acid Wines, and a correct List of every Thing in season for every Month in the Year.Early edition of this book - it was first published in 1746. Glasse herself had died in 1770, but her signature continued to be used (in facsimile) to distinguish genuine editions. The most successful English cookbook of the eighteenth century, characterized by typical English fare of the time. Mrs. Glasse's cookbook has been praised particularly for its great variety of savoury pies as well as for its wealth of recipes for pickles and preserving. Culinary historian, Karen Hess, calls this "the most important and popular work in the Colonies, as in England, during the latter half of the eighteenth century, with innumerable editions and revisions."
