Former ownership signature of ‘Mrs Hemmingway , Colt Court, Storrington’ (Sussex) on front board...With the facsimile of Hannah Glasse’s signature on Chapter One as issued. Being a working reference book, the contents are well used with some light stains throughout. Early edition of this book - it was first published in 1746. Glasse herself had died in 1770, but her signature continued to be used (in facsimile) to distinguish genuine editions. The most successful English cookbook of the eighteenth century, characterized by typical English fare of the time. Mrs. Glasse's cookbook has been praised particularly for its great variety of savoury pies as well as for its wealth of recipes for pickles and preserving. Culinary historian, Karen Hess, calls this "the most important and popular work in the Colonies, as in England, during the latter half of the eighteenth century, with innumerable editions and revisions."
