Full Leather. Poor. xl, 416 pp. + Index. Title page missing. 8vo., The first page To The Reader is loose and with some lose to text in the inner margin.; the last page is 415/416 is also loose and the two/three last leaves of the index are missing. Both boards loose, spine has dried up. The spine and backstrip are still holding nicely. Former ownership signature of Mrs Hemmingway , Colt Court, Storrington (Sussex) on front board...With the facsimile of Hannah Glasses signature on Chapter One as issued. Being a working reference book, the contents are well used with some light stains throughout. Early edition of this book - it was first published in 1746. Glasse herself had died in 1770, but her signature continued to be used (in facsimile) to distinguish genuine editions. The most successful English cookbook of the eighteenth century, characterized by typical English fare of the time. Mrs. Glasse's cookbook has been praised particularly for its great variety of savoury pies as well as for its wealth of recipes for pickles and preserving. Culinary historian, Karen Hess, calls this "the most important and popular work in the Colonies, as in England, during the latter half of the eighteenth century, with innumerable editions and revisions."
