About This Item

No dust jacket. Soft leather binding feels nice, but is rather fragile. In the case of this book, that has led to damage at both ends of the spine (photos #4 and 5) and exposed boards at the corners (photo #6). Gilt stamped print and decoration on the front and spine. Hinge splits front and back, a failure of glue that could be repaired (front split shown in photo #8). Decorative endpapers. The pages are clean, tight and intact, with gilt top edges. I found only two others from 1929 online, neither of which are leather-bound. This seems to be a very rare edition. Originally published in 1919.

Synopsis

Set in the 1870s, this tale concerns the love of an English sea captain for the Spanish beauty Dona Rita. He carries Carlist munitions to Peninsular ports, she finances the project. Conrad recounts all the adventures of gun-running and the ever-threatening sea, but never loses his theme, the beautiful and transitory nature of love. Conrad treasured this story, and explained it as a fragment from his "buried youth."
