About This Item
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1913. First Printing, First Edition Thus. . Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. Hornblow's 1913 mystery features Asche Kayton, a New York private detective, investigating the murder of John Argyle, a millionaire with more than a few enemies including his son and his lawyer as well as members of his counterfeiting gang. Based on a play by Harriet Ford and Harvey J. O'Higgins, the novel highlights "modern" crime-fighting techniques such as electronic listening devices and fingerprinting. Boards show wear at the spine ends and corner; title lettering on spine is also worn and rear hinge has begun to crack. Top edge of text shows light soiling and small, dime-sized stain; previous owner's name on half title page, o/w boards and text are clean and unmarked, tight and square. Tissue protecting frontispiece photo is whole and undamaged; several other b & w illustrations, probably from the play, scattered throughout the text. Sorry, no dustjacket. A very decent copy of an early 20th century American mystery.
