Volume VIII. Slight cracking to hinges, with exposed netting, pages remain attached. Pages and illustrations have light tanning and foxing throughout. Water staining to some pages, text remains readable. Pencil mark to title page. Boards have heavy shelf-wear with bumping to corners, crushing to spine ends and rub wear all over. Light tanning to spine and edges. Tears to leather to spine edges. Wear marks overall.

Quarter-leather and marbled boards, includes illustrations, nice frontis of a sailing vessel and rowboat, a well-preserved copy of this vintage publication, the former owner's name is neatly written on the blank front end-paper and some of the pages have scattered mild tanning/foxing, overall the contents are quite nice, the leather has mild edge-wear, the decorative spine with raised bands looks great ; 516 pages .

Articles include "Cornwall and the Devon Coast" with Sixteen In-Text Illustrations by Charles W. Wood. Also "A Tomb in a Foreign Land" by the Author of East Lynne. Contempoeary Red Half-Leather Binding with 5 Raised Bands to spine. Gilt Title on brown ground in 2nd compartment and Gilt Date in 4th. Spine colour faded to brown. Some edge wear and rubbing to boards. A few small spots of foxing to first few pages but only an occasional spot elsewhere. "Putney" penciled on backof title page, no other inscriptions. Pages and Plates in very good condition. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall

Volume XXV, XXVII and XXXIII from the years 18678, 1879 and 1881. The Argosy was originally founded by Alexander Strahan in 1865 but was later bought, owned and edited by Ellen Wood. The Argosy published several stories and serials by leading authors of the time as well as amusing quotations, excerpts and cartoons. With hundreds of vignette illustrations and full page plates throughout. Ellen Wood was better known as Mrs Henry Wood. aside from her editorial work she is best remembered for her 1861 novel East Lynne. Many of her books became international best-sellers and her work was very well received in America.
