Philadelphia: Childs & Peterson, 1856. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 2 vol. 8vo. [4], 5-464, [4]; [2], 3-467, [3] pp. Contemporary polished brown calf, blindstamped decorations on the boards, spine in six compartments, each spine with an orange and a black morocco label lettered in gilt; all edges gilt. Brown coated endpapers and pastedowns. Each volume with a brown silk ribbon bookmark bound in. Both volumes illustrated with a frontispiece, a vignette title page, and with several steel-engraved plates and in-text engravings. Volume one has eleven plates, volume two with seven. Volume two with a map (a plate) and with a folding map at the end. Steel plates by J.M. Butler from illustrations by the author, wood engravings by Van Ingen and Snyder. Arctic Bibliography 8373. Sabin 37001. With notes about Greenland, specifically, Ellesmere Island, Smith Sound, the flora and fauna of the area, and some ethnographic data of the Inuit people Kane encountered. Sabin notes that a large portion of Kane's narrative is devoted to descriptions of the Native people of the North Pole. Volume one lacks a folding map, leaves show toning and the fold-out map in volume two has a closed tear.
