[i-ii] publisher's advertisement, [ii], 464; [ii], 467 [1] pp. 22 plates, 3 maps (2 folding), appendix. Illustrated with nearly 300 engravings on steel and wood from sketches by the author. Frontispiece portraits, title page vignettes, head and tailpieces. Half-title page vignettes by J. McGoffin after drawings by J. Hamilton. Brown end papers. Original covers with gilt titling to spines. Covers frayed, splitting, worn. Sporadic foxing, and damp staining, mainly to plate page edges and tissue guards. Volume 1 front hinge splitting, front end paper becoming detached, previous owners signatures on ffep, New York March 5th 1857 press clipping tipped in.
